Click here to watch “Chechnya: Land of the Wolves – Part 2”
The two wars in Chechnya have brought unprecedented loss of lives on the Chechens with their economy in tatters. There is not a single family in Chechnya that has not suffered terrible loss during the 15 year old conflict. You will not find one single neighborhood that does not bear the scars of the wars. You might find children playing in the streets but it is hard to find a kid who did not lose his father or mother, uncles or aunties, cousins, friends or grandparents in the conflict. Civilians on the other side, hundreds of Russians, Ingush, Ossets, Dagestanis and many other people of different ethnicity lost their loved ones too.
Thanks for showing us the other part of picture. But still not conviced if such act of retaliation could be considered justifiable? I guess not. If they keep attacking innocent civilians instead of troops. Anyways. I wish the leaders come together to solve this issue. Lets hope.
Nothing to add, well detail-covering post. Being emotionally blinded is dangerous, from either side.
This post highlights well many different turning points in the history of these two nations. Hopefully the leaders take seriously the recent bombings so that there will be no more casualties.
“Homo homini lupus est“ (“man is a wolf to man“) – this sentence from my Latin classes years ago sprang up in my mind while reading your post. As long as there are men, they will be fighting, battling, destroying each other. Man is the only being that is deliberately killing his own species. No other creature on this planet would ever be this self-destructive – and this obsessed with power and might. Man will never be content with what he has got, no matter how much this may be. In his struggle to become better, greater, superior to the rest, and driven by his fear of the unknown, man will always fight – fight others, fight his own kind. This is obvious in wars and world conflicts, in racial conflicts, in neighbourhood and gang rivalry and many more examples. Injustice and crime lead to ever more injustice and crime, and the spiral of revenge and retaliation is a vicious circle that knows no end.
I wish I could believe that something like ‘world peace’ is possible – but I’m too realistic to give in to this dream. The present proves that man hasn’t learnt from the past, and I don’t think he ever will. That’s sad and shameful… but the simple truth.
The very man who is up to destruction and all things related to it is the one who is also working to bring peace and stability to this world. The ones who kill innocent people and destroy property are confronted by law-abiding and honest people. The will is there but they need people like us to join them and contribute. We all can do it in our own capacity.
I think man has learnt from his past and will keep on learning from the past. I know where you’re coming from and you’re right. Wars are waging and plenty of bloodshed and destruction but we should also take into regard the construction and development going on. Just need to spread it to all corners of the world. I’m sure that proper use of science and technology can bring ultimate peace in the world or at least help bring it closer. We need to assume our power, people’s power, and get ourselves connected and aware of the realities. Then no one can fool us into supporting wars!
After all… civilians are the ones who pay the consequences of other people’s actions. Perhaps it’s impossible, but we shall find peace, because in peace is freedom.
Very clear post… keep it up! (llegará tu recompensa)

It truly is a shame that so many people have died in relation to the Chechen independence movement. I was listening to a conservative newscast here in the States two days ago (because I love to torture my ears) and the commentator implied that the resistance is directly contributed to Islam. Of course it has nothing to do with the aspirations of an oppressed people attempting to gain their rights as a nation! He made some derogatory comments about how Islam is such a “wonderful, peaceful religion” as if to imply the opposite. While I personally believe in the right to self determination I have also long held the belief that attacks on civilians only hurts the cause you fight for, not to mention feeding ammunition to firebrand preachers of hate especially here in the US. Just a thought….
