So there, four words to describe this book – arrogant, ignorant, image, FAIL. It would certainly make my critique shorter if that was all I wrote, but my pen ran over in disgust.

What I cannot abide by is the Harper government’s unequivocal support given to Israel and its occupation of Palestine, its denial of the democratic election of Hamas, its support of the 2006 invasion of Lebanon, and its support of Israeli war crimes in Gaza and its subsequent dismissal of the Goldstone report.

Aslan’s views in ‘Beyond Fundamentalism’ have some background weaknesses e.g. globalization, the U.S. role in jihad etc. but the specific ideas he presents about terrorism, global jihad, fundamentalism and democratic rights are sound and accurate. It is a brief work with some powerful statements, a bit sensational at times, but mostly well grounded.
Read MoreThe Invention of the Jewish People is very well written and argued, taking a lot of mind work to assimilate the ideas and their implications. Whether anything real arises from this is uncertain. As the West in particular examines the atrocities that modern Israel perpetrates against the Palestinian people, this critical examination of Jewish history may add to the growing discontent of other peoples towards Israeli militarism and apartheid.
