Shares of digital infrastructure provider Applied Digital (NASDAQ: APLD) jumped 6.8% in the afternoon session after Wells Fargo initiated coverage with an Overweight rating and named the stock a top idea.

Wells Fargo cited 1.4 gigawatts of contracted capacity and a power-advantaged footprint as the key supports behind its bullish call on the company.

An Overweight rating signals that the analyst expects the shares to outperform peers over the firm’s investment horizon, a designation that carries meaningful weight for institutional investors.

For a capital-intensive data-center builder like Applied Digital, contracted power and capacity make future revenue more predictable and easier to model, which is why a bullish initiation can lift the stock materially.

Applied Digital’s shares are extremely volatile, having recorded 98 moves greater than 5% over the past year, making today’s gain notable but not historically unusual for the company.

The biggest single-day move over the past year came seven months ago, when the stock surged 24% as major indices rebounded from a week of heavy selling driven by a recovery in technology stocks and a significant bounce in Bitcoin.

Investor sentiment during that earlier rally was also supported by a surprising improvement in U.S. consumer sentiment and the realization that massive AI-related capital expenditure, such as Amazon’s planned $200 billion, directly benefits infrastructure providers.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average crossed the historic 50,000 threshold for the first time during that period, further lifting market-wide confidence and boosting sentiment toward growth and technology-linked names.

Despite today’s gains, Applied Digital remains down 4.9% since the beginning of the year, trading at $26.72 per share and sitting 46.2% below its 52-week high of $49.65 reached in May 2026.

Longer-term investors have fared considerably better, with a $1,000 investment made five years ago now worth approximately $2,152, reflecting the company’s significant growth trajectory over that period.

Wells Fargo’s initiation arrives at a time when the broader data center and AI infrastructure sector continues to attract intense investor interest, as demand for computing power shows no signs of slowing.

The combination of contracted capacity, a favorable power position, and growing institutional attention may give Applied Digital a stronger fundamental story to present to the market in the months ahead.
