Former Georgia congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene has renewed calls for transparency over the July 2024 assassination attempt on President Donald Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania, sharing a social media post questioning the circumstances of the attack and demanding to know why more information has not been made public.
Greene shared a lengthy post on Saturday from Trisha Hope, a January 6 activist, which focused on alleged irregularities around the shooting in which Thomas Matthew Crooks wounded Trump in the ear and killed rally attendee Corey Comperatore before being shot dead by a Secret Service countersniper.
“Corey Comperatore’s wife and daughters deserve to know why Corey, a true American patriot and hero was murdered in Butler,” Greene wrote. “Trump said repeatedly ‘I am your retribution.’ Where is the retribution?”
Greene was explicit that she was not calling the shooting a hoax, but framed her concerns around a failure by Trump to lead a push for full disclosure from the Secret Service and investigative authorities.
“I’m not calling the Butler assassination a hoax,” she wrote on Sunday. “But there are a lot of questions that deserve public answers.”
She then sharpened her focus. “I’m asking why won’t Trump release the information about Matthew Crooks? Did he actually act alone? If not, who is behind him and who helped him? Why the cover up??”
The posts drew immediate fire from within the MAGA ecosystem. Close Trump ally and activist Laura Loomer accused Greene and Buckley Carlson, Tucker Carlson’s son, of pushing a deranged conspiracy theory that Trump staged his own attempted assassination, calling the claims irresponsible and damaging.
Carlson responded by saying Comperatore’s family and all Americans deserved a genuine investigation, a position that placed him and Greene in unusual alignment against a portion of the pro-Trump media.
The episode is the latest chapter in Greene’s very public split with Trump since her resignation from Congress earlier in 2026, during which she has accused the administration of abandoning MAGA principles, prolonging unnecessary foreign conflicts and suppressing documents that promised accountability.
