Elon Musk issued a sharp warning to Democratic lawmakers on Wednesday, posting on his social platform X that those challenging him would face serious consequences.

Musk wrote, “Those who pick fights with me should understand that I will find out who is really pulling the strings and come for them, not just their puppets,” in response to a Politico report on his role at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

The warning came alongside mounting controversy over the potential shutdown of Starlink access in Ukraine, a matter with significant implications for U.S. foreign policy and national security.

A Wall Street Journal report, citing U.S. officials and people familiar with the matter, accused Musk of ordering a slowdown of Starshield, the military version of SpaceX’s Starlink internet service.

Starshield has been a vital communications tool that Ukraine relies on to defend itself against Russian missile and drone attacks, making the alleged slowdown a matter of acute geopolitical concern.

Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) addressed the controversy directly in an interview with Politico, raising concerns about the concentration of power in Musk’s hands.

“What happens when one guy gets a giant contract from the government and then uses it to do something that shuts down communication in a war that has been extremely important to the United States to support Ukraine,” Jayapal said.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth were quick to assign blame to Musk, even as President Trump claimed last week that neither he nor Musk was involved in the slowdown.

Trump’s precise role in the matter remains unclear, and the conflicting statements from senior administration officials have only deepened questions surrounding the episode.

Democrats are also looking to extend their existing probe into Musk’s work as a special federal employee at DOGE, with Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-Va.) having previously written to Trump arguing that Musk wielded undue influence over federal government operations.

The controversy places renewed scrutiny on the intersection of Musk’s vast government contracting relationships and his prominent political role, a combination that critics argue presents serious conflicts of interest.

Musk’s post on X, in which he wrote “live by the sword, die by the sword,” signals that the standoff between the billionaire and Democratic lawmakers is far from over.
