Walmart (NYSE: WMT) is making a bold push into fashion with a new private-label brand called Scenario, aiming to capture clothing dollars its customers currently spend at other retailers.

The retail giant already holds a commanding position in American shopping, with a fast-growing e-commerce business and an expanding base of higher-income customers drawn to its stores.

Scenario represents Walmart’s latest attempt to shift the way shoppers perceive its clothing business, built around a modern-bohemian aesthetic across apparel, shoes, jewelry, handbags and accessories.

Much of the Scenario collection is priced below $25, positioning it as an affordable alternative to fashion labels that charge a premium for brand recognition alone.

The strategy draws clear parallels to what Costco (NASDAQ: COST) has built over decades with its Kirkland Signature label, one of the most recognizable private-label brands in all of retail.

Costco has deliberately constructed Kirkland around quality and value, expanding it to cover hundreds of products across dozens of categories rather than positioning it simply as a cheaper substitute for national brands.

Costco has stated that Kirkland products are designed to deliver high quality at lower prices than comparable national brands, and the company has described Kirkland as one of the primary reasons customers choose to become Costco members.

Walmart is pursuing a different application of that concept, using Scenario to offer shoppers something they cannot find at any other retailer while still delivering on quality, style and value.

The success of Kirkland has prompted many retailers to reconsider their private-label strategies, recognizing that a well-executed house brand can build the kind of loyalty that drives repeat visits and long-term customer retention.

Walmart is betting that Scenario can replicate that dynamic in the fashion space, giving shoppers a compelling reason to turn to Walmart for clothing rather than heading to a dedicated apparel retailer.

The move reflects a broader ambition at Walmart to evolve beyond its reputation as a destination for groceries and household essentials, building credibility in categories where it has historically struggled to compete.

Whether Scenario gains the cultural traction that Kirkland has earned will depend on whether Walmart can consistently deliver on the quality and distinctiveness the brand promises to shoppers.
