Palantir Technologies (NYSE: PLTR) was founded on May 6, 2003, in Palo Alto, California, marking the beginning of one of the most consequential technology companies in modern history.

Peter Thiel bankrolled the creation of a prototype in 2004, working alongside PayPal engineer Nathan Gettings and Stanford University students Joe Lonsdale and Stephen Cohen.

That same year, Thiel hired Alex Karp, a former colleague from Stanford Law School, as chief executive officer, a role Karp continues to hold today.

Palantir’s earliest and most defining relationship was with In-Q-Tel, the CIA’s non-profit venture capital arm, which recognized the company’s potential in counterterrorism data analysis.

The company built a custom counterterrorism data demo that caught the agency’s attention, and In-Q-Tel subsequently invested approximately $2 million in Palantir.

That government backing helped establish Palantir as a trusted partner for intelligence and defense operations, a reputation that would define its brand for years to come.

In 2008, Palantir launched Gotham, its first major software platform, built specifically for intelligence and defense customers handling complex, sensitive datasets.

The company then moved to broaden its reach into commercial markets, partnering with Thomson Reuters in 2010 to offer its Metropolis analytics platform to financial services clients.

Palantir introduced Foundry in 2016, a platform designed to help organizations integrate data and manage operations across large-scale commercial enterprises.

Palantir went public through a direct listing on the New York Stock Exchange on September 30, 2020, opening at $10 per share on its first day of trading.

In the company’s IPO prospectus, Karp wrote that “our welfare and security depend on effective software,” a statement that captured Palantir’s dual commitment to national defense and technological innovation.

On April 7, 2023, Palantir announced its Artificial Intelligence Platform, known as AIP, designed to connect large language models to its existing data platforms and help organizations deploy AI across their operations.

The launch of AIP positioned Palantir at the center of the enterprise AI boom, drawing significant investor interest and accelerating the company’s commercial growth trajectory.

From a CIA-funded startup to a publicly traded AI company, Palantir’s evolution over more than two decades reflects the growing intersection of data intelligence, government security, and corporate technology strategy.
