Speculative social-media stocks are absorbing far steeper losses than benchmark indexes after September’s consumer price index came in hotter than expected.
Trump Media & Technology Group (NASDAQ: DJT) is trading at $7.38, representing a 5% decline, while Rumble (NASDAQ: RUM) is matching that drop at $6.39, also down 5% on the session.
By contrast, the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (NYSEARCA: SPY) is down just 0.64%, and the Global X Social Media ETF (NASDAQ: SOCL) has slipped only 0.3%, a fraction of the losses in both platforms.
The September CPI rose 3.7% year over year, topping the 3.6% Dow Jones consensus estimate, while on a monthly basis the index climbed 0.6% from August, its highest level in the past year.
A stronger inflation trend tends to push back the timing of Federal Reserve rate cuts, a shift that weighs hardest on loss-making companies whose shares trade largely on sentiment and retail enthusiasm.
Long-term borrowing costs were already elevated heading into the report, with the 10-year Treasury yield sitting at 5.24% as of October 9, adding further pressure on unprofitable names.
Trump Media operates the Truth Social platform alongside the Truth+ streaming service, the Truth.Fi financial-products arm, and the Truth API data-licensing product, which launched August 1 and has signed more than 10 customer agreements.
Despite those product additions, the company posted revenue of just $1.7 million in Q2 2026, against a net loss of $238.11 million, with $190.4 million of that figure stemming from unrealized losses on digital assets and equity securities.
The company holds $1.9 billion in financial assets, and late in September, Trump Media and fusion-energy firm TAE Technologies filed a registration statement for an all-stock merger targeting a Q4 2026 close, though the Securities and Exchange Commission has not yet declared that filing effective.
Rumble, which runs an online video platform and is building Rumble Cloud into GPU infrastructure through its Northern Data acquisition of approximately 22,400 GPUs, posted Q1 2026 revenue of $25.46 million, down 15.8% year over year and short of the $27.09 million consensus estimate.
Average monthly active users at Rumble reached 56 million in Q1 2026, up 8% sequentially, driven by Rumble Shorts and international expansion, though a net loss of $30.27 million underscores how far the business remains from profitability.
Reddit (NYSE: RDDT) offers a contrast as a larger, profitable, advertising-supported community platform, with RDDT shares declining a more modest 2% to $152.27 on the session.
Trump Media stock was down 43% year to date through the prior session’s close, while Rumble was up 3% over the same stretch, illustrating how differently the two names have performed even as both fall in tandem on today’s inflation data.
Regulatory progress on the TAE Technologies filing remains Trump Media’s next key milestone, and any further Federal Reserve commentary on the rate path could reset borrowing cost expectations and again reprice loss-making platforms.
