Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) CEO Satya Nadella has praised Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) CEO Jensen Huang as the most consistent visionary in the history of accelerated computing.
Speaking alongside Huang, Nadella reflected on how the Nvidia chief had shaped his own thinking about the long-term trajectory of high-performance computing infrastructure.
“He has been perhaps the most consistent with the vision of what accelerated computing can be,” Nadella said, describing Huang’s influence as stretching back across decades of industry development.
Nadella argued that Huang’s vision has proven more expansive than any single PC form factor or chip architecture, placing it in a category of its own within the technology sector.
The two executives also revealed a remarkable origin story behind the infrastructure that would eventually power OpenAI’s (OPAI.PVT) breakthrough GPT language models.
Nadella recalled that early discussions within Azure centered on how large accelerated computing and high-performance computing could realistically become inside a cloud environment.
Huang noted that Microsoft, under Nadella’s leadership, was the first cloud provider to deploy Infiniband networking technology, a move that proved to be foundational for what came next.
“Satya was the first user of Infiniband inside a cloud, which brought the first supercomputer to OpenAI, which boom,” Huang said, crediting that early infrastructure decision as a pivotal moment.
Nadella acknowledged the role of chance in the sequence of events, noting that a decision made for high-performance computing purposes ended up reshaping the trajectory of artificial intelligence.
“If we had not done that for HPC, we wouldn’t have had the supercomputer to give to OpenAI to go train a GPT model and rest would have been history,” Nadella said.
He described the moment when OpenAI co-founder Sam Altman approached Microsoft asking whether computing capacity was available, with Nadella recounting his own response as a tentative “yeah, maybe.”
The anecdote underscores how consequential infrastructure investments, made without foresight of their ultimate application, can define entire technological eras.
Nadella was clear in attributing lasting credit to Huang, framing his leadership not as a response to immediate market conditions but as a long-term secular conviction.
“The thing that I really give Jensen all the credit, quite frankly, is that consistency of vision of what this can be, not today, not tomorrow, but as a secular trend,” Nadella said.
