Avnet, Inc. (NASDAQ: AVT) and Super Micro Computer (NASDAQ: SMCI) both serve the booming AI infrastructure sector, but from distinctly different positions within the supply chain.

Super Micro Computer offers rack-scale Total IT Solutions including complete servers, storage systems, blade servers, subsystems, and server management software targeting AI deployments directly.

Avnet distributes semiconductors and interconnect, passive and electromechanical devices, while also providing supply chain management, inventory replenishment systems, and engineering design services to the broader AI ecosystem.

With AI industry spending accelerating rapidly, both companies stand to benefit, but their growth trajectories, profitability profiles, and valuation metrics tell meaningfully different stories for investors.

SMCI reported fiscal 2026 revenues rising 78% to $39.1 billion, with management disclosing that more than $60 billion in new orders were received in the fourth quarter alone, leaving a record backlog entering fiscal 2027.

Management expects AI-related solutions to exceed 80% of revenues going forward, supported by shipments across NVIDIA’s GB300 NVL72, HGX B300, B200 NVL4, and RTX 6000 Pro product lines during the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026.

SMCI has guided fiscal 2027 sales in the range of $65 billion to $72 billion, with the Zacks Consensus Estimate for fiscal 2027 sales pegged at $67.1 billion and first-quarter year-over-year top-line growth implied at 194%.

Despite the impressive revenue outlook, SMCI’s profitability remains sensitive to product mix, with management projecting a gross margin of only 10.4% to 10.8% in the first quarter of fiscal 2027, down sharply from 17.6% in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026.

Avnet’s Electronic Components business generated $7.8 billion in fourth-quarter sales, up 49% year over year, with data center and networking identified among the leading demand drivers across all end markets.

Avnet’s Farnell business further strengthened the company’s earnings profile, with fourth-quarter operating margin reaching 9%, compared with 5.2% in the prior quarter and 4.3% a year earlier.

Book-to-bill ratios remained above parity across all regions for Avnet, while lead times trended higher across most product categories, signaling firm underlying demand heading into fiscal 2027.

Avnet’s end-market exposure extends beyond AI alone, with fourth-quarter demand growth recorded across data center, networking, aerospace and defense, and industrial applications simultaneously.

The Zacks Consensus Estimate for AVT’s fiscal 2027 earnings implies year-over-year growth of 240%, compared with 202% earnings growth implied for SMCI over the same period.

In terms of share price performance, AVT has surged 104.3% year-to-date, significantly outpacing SMCI’s already notable gain of 41.9% over the same period.

From a valuation standpoint, AVT trades at a forward 12-month price-to-sales ratio of 0.23x, slightly above its median of 0.21x, while SMCI trades at 0.39x, below its own median of 0.42x.

Both AVT and SMCI currently carry a Zacks Rank of 1, designated as Strong Buy, yet Avnet’s diversified end-market exposure, improving operating leverage, and stronger earnings growth expectations give it a more balanced risk-reward profile at this stage.
