The White House is moving to exclude three major news organizations from its premises, with President Trump announcing bans on CNN, MSNBC, and Politico over what he describes as unfavorable coverage.
Trump made the announcement via social media, stating effective immediately that the outlets were banned “as a result of their constant ‘reporting’ FAKE NEWS!”
The president did not provide specific details in his post about how the ban would be implemented or enforced across White House operations.
Trump’s post warned that additional outlets could face similar consequences, writing “Other Fake News Media Outlets to follow,” signaling a potentially broader crackdown on press access.
In his announcement, Trump argued that “Media Outlets shouldn’t be able to constantly write or report FICTION and LIES when they’re covering the President of the United States, the Trump Administration, or the United States of America.”
The move represents the latest challenge to First Amendment protections guaranteeing freedom of the press, as the administration escalates its ongoing conflict with mainstream media organizations.
The ban on CNN carries particular significance, as it could disrupt the traditional five-network television pool that travels with the president to provide independent coverage of his actions and interactions.
This action follows a pattern of media restrictions pursued by the Trump administration, including the February 2025 decision to bar Associated Press journalists from the Oval Office, Air Force One, and other small-pool events.
That exclusion of the Associated Press came in retaliation for the outlet’s refusal to adopt Trump’s preferred renaming of the Gulf of Mexico, and the AP subsequently filed a lawsuit that remains ongoing.
Since returning to office, Trump has also pursued legal action against a range of other outlets, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and the BBC.
Trump has a long history of bristling at news coverage he maintains casts him in a negative light, frequently lashing out at individual reporters both in person and across social media platforms.
The announcement came moments before Trump spoke to reporters in the Oval Office during a health care event, with plans afterward to visit his golf club in Virginia for a meeting and dinner sponsored by his Super PAC.
