D-Wave Quantum Inc. (NASDAQ: QBTS), the only dual-platform quantum computing company offering both annealing and gate-model systems, has finalized a definitive agreement with the U.S. Department of Commerce.
The agreement, built on a previously announced Letter of Intent, grants D-Wave access to up to $100 million in funding under the U.S. CHIPS and Science Act.
The deal marks a significant moment for the domestic quantum computing sector, which has increasingly attracted federal attention as geopolitical competition in advanced technologies intensifies.
D-Wave positions itself as uniquely capable in the quantum space, offering both annealing and gate-model quantum computing products and services alongside supporting software and cloud infrastructure.
CEO Dr. Alan Baratz welcomed the award, stating: “We’re grateful to the U.S. government for this award to D-Wave and for the leadership it is demonstrating in advancing quantum innovation.”
Dr. Baratz emphasized that the administration has signaled quantum leadership will depend on more than research breakthroughs alone, requiring commercialization, scaling, and domestic manufacturing capacity.
“This award will help fulfill that mission by expanding domestic quantum capabilities, strengthening the underlying supply chain and bringing increasingly powerful quantum systems to market,” Dr. Baratz said.
The CHIPS and Science Act funding is intended to reinforce America’s position at the forefront of next-generation computing, a field where international rivals have been investing heavily in recent years.
D-Wave counts more than 100 organizations across commercial, government, and research sectors as customers, all relying on its systems to address complex computational challenges.
The company delivers quantum computing both through on-premises enterprise-grade systems and via its Leap quantum cloud service, which the company says maintains 99.9% availability and uptime.
D-Wave holds the distinction of being the world’s first commercial supplier of quantum computers, giving it a substantial head start in building operational infrastructure and customer relationships.
The finalized agreement with the Department of Commerce is expected to accelerate D-Wave’s ability to develop and manufacture increasingly advanced quantum systems on American soil.
