Oklo (NYSE: OKLO) has emerged as one of the most watched energy stocks in the AI infrastructure boom, promising a seemingly perfect solution to the power demands of modern data centers.

The stock has had a turbulent ride since its market debut in May 2024, characterized by sharp rallies followed by steep declines that have left many investors questioning its trajectory.

Oklo is down roughly 39% in 2026, trading well below its 52-week high of approximately $194, a performance that trails the broader market by a significant margin.

Despite that weakness, analysts maintain an average price target of $80, implying meaningful upside from current levels and signaling that Wall Street has not abandoned the long-term thesis.

The bull case begins and ends with regulatory progress, specifically the approval of Oklo’s Aurora powerhouse reactor design by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, which remains the single most important catalyst for the stock.

Oklo has been advancing through the NRC process, a push that has gained momentum as the Trump administration has pledged to quadruple U.S. nuclear capacity, creating a more favorable political environment for the company.

A key 2026 milestone already achieved is the approval of its Principal Design Criteria topical report for Aurora, the first of which is now under construction at Idaho National Laboratory.

A separate regulatory milestone supporting the bull case is Department of Energy authorization for its Grove Isotope Test Reactor, which will power Oklo’s isotope business rather than AI data centers, representing a potential multibillion-dollar revenue stream before its core AI-facing reactors are online.

On the demand side, Oklo has assembled a project backlog reaching 14 gigawatts, largely through non-binding agreements with hyperscalers and AI data center operators who are locking in power capacity years in advance.

In January 2026, Oklo signed a landmark deal with Meta Platforms to develop nuclear power capacity, with Meta agreeing to support up to 1.2 gigawatts of development at a planned Ohio campus and prepaying to help fund fuel.

The company ended June holding approximately $3 billion in cash and marketable securities, providing a substantial financial buffer as it moves toward commercialization.

Guidance for 2026 calls for $120 million to $150 million of operating cash use, alongside $400 million to $500 million of capital spending on property and equipment, with the company indicating it has sufficient funds to reach 2028.

A commercial start in 2028 would represent a remarkable achievement, taking Oklo from groundbreaking to operational nuclear power in roughly three years, a pace the nuclear industry has not managed in decades.

If Oklo delivers on that timeline while continuing to advance its regulatory agenda and expand its customer base, the bear case becomes significantly harder to sustain at current valuations.
