Rocket Lab (NASDAQ: RKLB) has confirmed its first dedicated commercial booking for its unflown Neutron rocket, signing a launch agreement with Canadian satellite operator Kepler Communications.
The deal, announced on August 10, 2026, will see Neutron carry a batch of Kepler’s satellites into low Earth orbit, with the mission scheduled for no earlier than 2028.
Neutron is Rocket Lab’s next-generation reusable rocket, designed to lift in excess of 28,000 pounds of payload into low Earth orbit, positioning it as a direct competitor to SpaceX’s Falcon 9.
The rocket has yet to complete a single flight test, with its development timeline having slipped multiple times as the company works through performance and safety challenges.
By early 2025, Rocket Lab appeared on track for an initial Neutron test flight before the end of that year, but the milestone was pushed back to early 2026, and then again to late 2026 or even early 2027.
Further delays remain possible if new technical concerns emerge during the ongoing development process, making the timeline to an operational Neutron rocket genuinely uncertain.
Despite that uncertainty, Kepler Communications chose Neutron over existing and proven alternatives, including SpaceX, for this dedicated launch contract.
Kepler’s chief revenue officer framed the booking as the company’s first dedicated, non-rideshare launch purchase, after its first 33 satellites flew as rideshare payloads, some aboard SpaceX’s Falcon 9.
The mission is slated to fly from Rocket Lab’s Wallops Island Launch Complex 3, once the Neutron vehicle is certified and ready for commercial operations.
The agreement signals a degree of market confidence in Rocket Lab’s long-term launch capabilities, even as the company races to prove Neutron is a viable and reliable alternative in an increasingly competitive commercial launch sector.
For Rocket Lab, landing a paying customer ahead of Neutron’s first flight provides both commercial validation and additional pressure to deliver on a development program that has already tested investor patience with repeated schedule revisions.
The broader competitive dynamic between Rocket Lab and SpaceX in the medium-lift launch market will ultimately depend on whether Neutron can reach orbit reliably and at a price point that gives satellite operators a genuine reason to look beyond the Falcon 9.
