BAE Systems (LSE: BA.) has completed the first delivery of ARCHER 8×8 mobile howitzers to the Swedish Armed Forces, marking a significant milestone in Sweden’s divisional artillery modernisation program.
The handover ceremony took place at the Villingsberg firing range and was administered by the Swedish Defense Materiel Administration, known as FMV, underscoring the formal nature of the transition.
The delivery represents the first four mobile howitzers handed over as part of a broader contract signed between Sweden and BAE Systems back in 2023.
That original agreement, valued at $500 million, covers the supply of 48 new ARCHER artillery systems to bolster Sweden’s long-range ground-based firepower.
A further order for 18 additional ARCHER systems was subsequently announced in 2025 as part of Sweden’s broader military support package, expanding the scope of the program considerably.
Lena Gillström, CEO of BAE Systems Bofors, described the handover as a product of sustained collaboration between key defense stakeholders in Sweden and the United Kingdom.
“This step is the result of close cooperation between BAE Systems, FMV, and the Swedish Armed Forces,” Gillström said, highlighting the institutional partnerships underpinning the delivery.
Gillström added: “Seeing the ARCHERS formally handed over to the Swedish Armed Forces is proof of our shared commitment to strengthening Sweden’s long-range artillery capabilities.”
She also noted the broader implications of the milestone, stating: “This milestone paves the way for further deliveries, supporting Sweden’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its divisional artillery capabilities.”
The ARCHER system is a next-generation wheeled artillery platform purpose-built to operate alongside fast-moving land forces in dynamic combat environments.
BAE Systems designed the ARCHER to deliver a combination of superior mobility, enhanced lethality, and improved crew survivability compared to older, tracked artillery systems.
Sweden’s investment in the ARCHER program reflects a wider European trend of accelerating defense procurement amid an evolving continental security landscape and heightened military readiness requirements.
