Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) will host a production Cybercab launch event in Austin, Texas, on September 3, marking a major milestone in the company’s autonomous vehicle strategy.
Emailed invites to the event surfaced over the weekend on X among Tesla watchers and were subsequently confirmed by EV outlets including Teslarati.
Tesla stock was little changed following the unofficial confirmation of the upcoming production reveal of the two-seat, purpose-built robotaxi.
The Cybercab features no steering wheel and no pedals, making it Tesla’s first vehicle designed purely for autonomous operation.
It is built to run on Tesla’s Full Self-Driving software as part of the robotaxi fleet the company launched in Austin last year, alongside modified Model Ys.
Tesla’s stock trades at a premium built on the expectation that the company can transform its robotaxi fleet into a fully autonomous ride-hailing network, while also selling FSD subscriptions at software-like margins.
The launch timing follows significant regulatory momentum, with Nevada’s Transportation Authority unanimously approving permits last week for Tesla, Alphabet’s (NASDAQ: GOOGL) Waymo, and Uber (NYSE: UBER) to operate commercial robotaxis in Clark County, home to Las Vegas.
The Nevada permits authorize up to 8,000 driverless vehicles across the three operators over the next 12 months, representing one of the largest regulatory greenlit deployments of autonomous vehicles in the United States.
Tesla drew the largest single allocation of around 5,000 robotaxis, though its Cybercab chief engineer told regulators the company realistically expects to field approximately 2,500 vehicles within the year.
“The 5,000 has always been a ceiling for us,” the Cybercab chief engineer said, according to TechCrunch.
Waymo was cleared for up to 1,000 vehicles, while Uber secured an additional 1,000 through its partnerships with Hyundai-backed Motional and Amazon’s (NASDAQ: AMZN) Zoox, which holds a separate permit for 100 vehicles.
Taxi and livery operators pushed back against the approvals, warning of potential oversaturation and increased congestion in the high-traffic corridor between the Las Vegas Strip and the airport.
Despite the regulatory green light, Tesla will still need to demonstrate to local officials and competitors that Cybercabs can operate safely without anyone in the driver’s seat.
Investors and enthusiasts will get a much clearer picture of the production vehicle when Tesla officially pulls back the curtain at the Austin launch event on September 3.
