Strategy (NASDAQ: MSTR) surged 13% to $104.72 midday Wednesday as Bitcoin punched back above $68,000 for the first time in months, triggering a broad rally across crypto-linked equities.
Bitmine Immersion Technologies (NYSEAMERICAN: BMNR) climbed 13% to $20.63, while Coinbase (NASDAQ: COIN) added 11% to reach $162.88, marking the sharpest single-day move for these crypto proxies all summer.
Bitcoin traded at $68,500, up 6% over the prior 24 hours, with Ethereum trading at $1,908 as of August 19, according to CoinGecko data.
No company-specific catalyst has emerged, with the move appearing to be a rebound off summer lows, potentially reinforced by the SEC’s proposed “Regulation Crypto Assets” framework.
Despite Wednesday’s sharp gains, all three stocks remain deeply in the red for the year, with Strategy down 39%, Bitmine down 33%, and Coinbase down 35% through Tuesday’s close.
Strategy’s leverage to Bitcoin has cut hard in 2026, with the company selling Bitcoin in multiple tranches since May to fund dividends on its STRC preferred shares, reversing its accumulation-only approach.
In Q2 2026, 12 of Strategy’s 15 largest institutional holders added to their positions, with combined holdings rising $700 million, trailing Q1 2026 when combined holdings rose $4.6 billion.
Capital International Investors remains Strategy’s largest holder after adding $346 million to lift its stake to $3.49 billion, representing 9.4% of shares outstanding, while Goldman Sachs nearly quadrupled its Strategy stake to $555 million.
BlackRock (NYSE: BLK) Institutional Trust grew its position by $84 million, while UBS trimmed $142 million from its holding during the same period.
Executive Chairman Michael Saylor posted on X that “some are trying to bring Bitcoin to billions” while “others are trying to win arguments on the internet,” offering his characteristic long-term framing amid the day’s volatility.
Bitmine’s exposure to Ethereum is substantial, with the company holding 4.8% of Ethereum’s circulating supply, making Chairman Tom Lee one of the asset’s largest institutional stakeholders.
Lee posted that crypto is “more relevant today given the rapidly increasing capabilities of AI and robotics,” calling Ethereum “the most important L1” in response to a BlackRock report titled “Re-Underwriting Bitcoin.”
The BlackRock report attributed Bitcoin’s 50% drawdown from its October 2025 high to crypto-native deleveraging, though it does not mention Ethereum, robotics, or blockchain verification of AI systems.
Coinbase remains the most direct equity beneficiary of sustained Bitcoin trading activity, with options positioning tilting bullish and a full-chain put/call ratio of 0.39.
Polymarket assigned a 98.6% probability that Coinbase shares would close higher on Wednesday, reflecting strong market conviction behind the day’s momentum.
The Bitwise Crypto Industry Innovators ETF (NYSEARCA: BITQ) traded at $23.48 and is up 12% year to date through Tuesday’s close, one of the few names in this cohort that remains green for 2026.
Traders are watching closely whether Bitcoin can hold above $68,000, with follow-through volume in Strategy, Bitmine, and Coinbase needed to distinguish a genuine trend change from a short-covering pop.
A bearish thread on WallStreetBets titled “Why I Expect $MSTR at $40ish in 8-12 Weeks” drew heavy engagement over the weekend, meaning a sustained rally from here could squeeze that positioning across the entire crypto-equity complex.
