BlackRock Health Sciences Trust (NYSE: BME) has drawn attention from dividend-focused investors following a “Potential Dividend Run Alert” issued through the DividendChannel.com Dividend Alerts service.

The concept of a “Dividend Run” centers on the expected price behavior of a stock in the period leading up to its ex-dividend date.

The ex-dividend date marks the trading day on which any new buyer of the stock is no longer entitled to receive the upcoming dividend payment.

All else equal, a stock’s price is expected to fall by the dividend amount on the ex-date, reflecting the fact that the buyer is no longer acquiring shares that carry that forthcoming cash payment.

If a stock consistently fell on ex-dividend dates without any corresponding rise beforehand, the share price would theoretically decline to zero over time, which makes little sense for a dividend-paying company generating consistent earnings.

This creates a kind of built-in upward pressure on the stock price in the period ahead of each dividend, which investors refer to as the “Dividend Run” effect.

Different investors approach Dividend Runs with different strategies, with some targeting a specific buy and sell window, while others prefer to hold through the ex-date and collect the dividend itself.

One commonly discussed approach involves purchasing shares approximately two weeks, or ten trading days, prior to the targeted sale date, aiming to capture price appreciation rather than dividend income.

Reviewing BME’s last four dividends, this two-week strategy would have captured a capital gain exceeding the dividend amount in three out of four instances, generating a total “Divvy Run” gain of +2.82, which surpassed the combined dividend total of 1.048 across those same four payments.

The most recent data point showed that on the June 15, 2026 ex-dividend date, shares closed at 40.94 the prior trading day, compared to 40.23 two weeks earlier, representing a gain of 0.71 against a dividend of 0.262 per share.

BME is now approaching its next ex-dividend date of August 14, 2026, with a dividend of 0.262 per share scheduled for payment on August 31, 2026, and the fund pays dividends on a monthly basis.

With an implied annualized yield of 7.14%, BME carries an income profile that keeps it firmly on the radar for investors who incorporate Dividend Run strategies into their broader approach.

As with any investment strategy, past performance is not a guarantee of future results, and investors should weigh the historical pattern against prevailing market conditions before acting.
