A new generation of futuristic tech stocks tied to nuclear power, quantum computing, space, and artificial intelligence has been slashed by roughly 60% from peak prices.
Investor Shay Boloor captured the mood in a recent post on X, writing “THE FUTURE IS ON SALE RIGHT NOW” while highlighting steep losses across the sector.
The group includes Oklo (OKLO), linked to advanced nuclear power, and IonQ (NASDAQ: IONQ), which operates in the quantum computing space.
Rocket Lab (NASDAQ: RKLB) and AST SpaceMobile (NASDAQ: ASTS) represent the space economy, while CoreWeave (NASDAQ: CRWV) and SoundHound AI are tied to the broader AI infrastructure build-out.
Across a basket of 21 selected stocks in these categories, the median name sits roughly 60% below its all-time high.
The critical warning for investors is that a deep markdown does not automatically make a stock a bargain, as anchoring to old highs can create a dangerously false sense of value.
A stock that was priced at elevated multiples during a period of peak enthusiasm may never revisit those levels, regardless of how far it has already fallen.
The mathematics of recovery make that reality even more sobering, as a stock down 60% from its high requires a 150% rally simply to break even.
The last cycle of pandemic-era darlings, including Peloton, Zoom, Roku, DocuSign, and Teladoc, demonstrated how brutal that arithmetic can become, with the median stock in a 20-name sample eventually declining roughly 90% from its highs.
Among that same group, after an initial 50% decline, the median stock went on to lose another 80% from that already-reduced price level.
As an old Wall Street saying goes, a stock down 99% can still fall another 100% from there, a reminder that prior losses offer no floor guarantee.
That comparison does not set a 90% decline target for today’s futuristic tech cohort, but it does illustrate how little the old high reveals about where the bottom actually sits.
Investors looking to distinguish a genuine opportunity from a value trap should focus on revenue growth, backlog expansion, customer adoption trends, improving margins, and early signs of free cash flow generation.
Valuation context matters too, with price-to-sales ratios offering a useful starting point for pre-profit companies, though they reveal little about debt levels, margins, or underlying financial strength.
On the technical side, analysts recommend watching for a stock to stop making new lows, build a consolidation base, or reclaim a key level such as its 50-day moving average before committing capital.
Improving fundamentals, a reset valuation, and stabilizing price action are the combination that can transform a steep markdown into a legitimate buying opportunity rather than a costly mistake.
