Giant Eagle Inc. has launched its “On Sale This Season” summer promotion, cutting prices across more than 300 of the most frequently purchased products in its supermarkets.
The campaign began Thursday, July 9, and runs through Labor Day, with reductions averaging 10% across protein items, snacks, and produce.
The initiative follows the success of Giant Eagle’s fall “On Sale This Season” effort, which drew nearly 2 million households between September and December 2025.
The pricing push is part of the grocer’s broader “Because It Matters” strategy, which the company says reaffirms its commitment to everyday value, quality, and shopping experience.
Beef is among the highlighted categories, with Giant Eagle cutting the price of certified Angus beef by over 10% to $5.99 per unit.
The move comes as Walmart also reduced the price of its 73% ground beef roll by nearly 12% to $5.94, part of a broader summer essentials rollback announced earlier this week alongside Sam’s Club.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s June Food Price Outlook forecasts food-at-home prices to rise 2.8% in 2026, above the 20-year average of 2.6%.
Bureau of Labor Statistics data show that cumulative increases have pushed food-at-home prices to roughly 30% above pre-pandemic levels, intensifying pressure on both consumers and grocers.
The pricing campaign coincides with a major corporate development: Kroger (NASDAQ: KR) announced on July 1 a $1.65 billion deal to acquire Giant Eagle, comprising $1.25 billion in cash and the assumption of approximately $400 million in outstanding liabilities.
Giant Eagle operates 197 supermarkets across Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Maryland, and Indiana, and posted roughly $9 billion in annual sales.
Kroger Chief Executive Officer Greg Foran described the target company favorably, saying “Giant Eagle is a well-run, high-quality regional grocer with a strong reputation for fresh products, pharmacy, private label and customer loyalty.”
Giant Eagle CEO Bill Artman welcomed the deal, stating, “Together with Kroger, we will be well positioned to advance our strategy and deliver better quality and service, better everyday value and a better shopping experience for our customers, while providing greater growth opportunities for our dedicated team members.”
Consumer Edge analyst Michael Gunther told Reuters the deal comes at “a challenging time for traditional grocers,” noting specialty banners like Trader Joe’s are outperforming while discounters including Aldi are pulling in trade-down traffic.
Gunther also noted that Giant Eagle’s customer base skews toward a more resilient older shopper, which may provide some insulation from broader consumer spending pressures.
The transaction still requires federal regulatory approval, with Kroger expecting the deal to close next year.
Online shoppers can apply the promo code STAYCOOL to pickup or delivery orders of $150 or more for an additional $10 discount, valid through July 22.
