Artificial intelligence has transformed power infrastructure into one of the market’s hottest investment themes in 2026, lifting utilities, turbine manufacturers, and fuel cell providers to remarkable valuations.

Bloom Energy (NYSE: BE) has delivered a striking 149% return year to date, reflecting Wall Street’s conviction that AI-driven electricity demand will sustain enormous growth for years ahead.

Yet that headline figure conceals a troubling reversal, with shares now sitting approximately 39% below their June peak as investors reassess how quickly major opportunities can convert into actual revenue.

The first challenge emerged earlier this month when a short seller publicly questioned Bloom’s long-term growth assumptions and its concentration among a relatively small number of customers.

While the market did not fully embrace that bearish thesis, it introduced another layer of uncertainty at a moment when expectations for AI infrastructure spending had already become aggressively optimistic.

The most significant development, however, centers on Oracle’s (NYSE: ORCL) proposed Stargate campus in New Mexico, known as Project Jupiter, representing a planned $165 billion investment and one of the largest AI infrastructure projects currently under development.

The project originally planned to use a natural gas-fired power plant, but local officials and residents raised serious concerns over emissions and water consumption, leading planners to pivot toward deploying up to 2.45 gigawatts of Bloom Energy’s solid oxide fuel cell technology.

That decision made Project Jupiter one of Bloom’s most visible and closely watched growth opportunities, only for New Mexico regulators to reject the project for a second time, dealing a significant blow to investor confidence.

The required air permit application remains pending, and while the New Mexico Environment Department has ordered a public hearing, no hearing date had been scheduled as of mid-July, leaving the project’s timeline deeply uncertain.

Revenue from Project Jupiter is now pushed further into the future, which carries real consequences for a stock priced around expectations of rapid and consistent growth.

Beyond this single project, a broader pattern is emerging across the country, with communities growing increasingly vocal about data center construction due to concerns over electricity demand, water use, land consumption, and environmental impact.

New York recently became the first state to approve a one-year statewide moratorium on new data center construction, raising the prospect that other states could adopt comparable policies in the months ahead.

For Bloom Energy, that national trend carries particular weight because its entire growth narrative depends on the rapid and largely uninterrupted expansion of AI data center capacity across the United States.

Regulatory delays do not eliminate long-term electricity demand, but they can postpone fuel cell orders significantly, stretching revenue recognition and making quarterly results far harder to predict with confidence.

Bloom’s fuel cell technology still offers meaningful advantages over conventional natural gas generation in locations where emissions standards and water constraints are major concerns, keeping the company well positioned over the longer term.

The tension between a 149% gain for the year and a 39% decline from the June peak reflects exactly how the market is wrestling with the gap between long-term promise and near-term execution risk.

Investors who believe in Bloom’s opportunity should not ignore the possibility that permitting delays and community resistance could cause growth to arrive considerably more slowly than current valuations assume.
