Paul Pelosi, the 86-year-old husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, was involved in a hit-and-run collision in California that left a parked vehicle with significant damage.
The incident occurred Friday in Yountville, a town located in the heart of California’s wine country, when Pelosi struck a legally parked car on the side of the road.
According to a statement from the Napa County Sheriff’s Office, Pelosi was driving his brown convertible when he collided with the parked vehicle, briefly stopped, and then drove away from the scene.
A witness observed the collision and called 911, prompting sheriff’s deputies to respond to the area and locate Pelosi shortly afterward.
Deputies found Pelosi with visible damage to the front of his vehicle on a road approximately a quarter of a mile from the scene of the collision.
He reportedly told officers he knew he had hit something but was uncertain when or what had caused the damage to his car.
No injuries were reported as a result of the collision, and authorities confirmed that Pelosi did not have any alcohol in his system at the time.
Because no one was injured, the Napa County Sheriff’s Office recommended a misdemeanor charge against Pelosi for fleeing the scene of an accident, though he was not arrested.
The sheriff’s office also referred Pelosi to the Department of Motor Vehicles for a process to determine whether he may continue to drive, which officials say is a common procedure for older drivers.
This is not Pelosi’s first brush with traffic-related legal trouble, as he pleaded guilty in 2022 to misdemeanor charges of driving under the influence in Napa County.
As part of that earlier case, he was sentenced to five days in jail and three years of probation, though he ultimately served only two days behind bars, with good conduct credit applied to two additional days.
His 2022 probation terms also required him to attend a three-month drinking driver class, install an ignition interlock device, pay approximately $5,000 in victim restitution, and pay nearly $2,000 in fines.
That same year, Pelosi was also attacked and severely beaten with a hammer at the couple’s San Francisco home, a case that drew national attention and resulted in his attacker receiving a life sentence.
A staffer for Nancy Pelosi did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment on the latest incident.
