Subscriber retention at Starz (NASDAQ: STRZ) has become the company’s most telling financial signal, with long-tenured customers reaching all-time highs and churn settling at historic lows heading into year-end.
Management has calibrated its long-term financial models around a 24-month revenue growth window, a framework built on the premise that customers who stay longer and pay more generate superior lifetime value.
That retention thesis translated directly into the strongest quarterly revenue result of the year, with total third-quarter 2026 sales reaching $322 million following the October 29 earnings call.
OTT revenue was the primary engine of that result, contributing $227 million to the quarter after an April price increase and higher renewal pricing took hold across the subscriber base.
Adjusted OIBDA of $44 million came in above analyst expectations and marked a sharp improvement over the same period a year earlier, underscoring the operating leverage the company is extracting from its streaming business.
Cash generation held up as well, with unlevered free cash flow reaching $18.8 million in Q3 and bringing the year-to-date total to $85 million, while equity free cash flow for the same nine-month period stood at $48 million.
A strategic push into proprietary content production sits at the center of Starz’s margin expansion plan, with owned original programming reducing studio dependency while preserving intellectual property rights for long-term monetization.
Controlling its own content library also opens the door to high-margin international licensing deals, a revenue stream that becomes increasingly valuable as the company builds out its global distribution footprint.
On the debt side, Starz absorbed an additional $67 million in term debt during the quarter yet still managed to bring leverage down to 2.8x by the end of Q3, with management projecting that figure will reach approximately 2.7x by December.
The longer-range financial road map calls for leverage of 2.5 times or lower in the back half of 2027, alongside a target adjusted OIBDA margin of 20% during that same period, a combination that management says it remains confident in delivering.
