Novo Nordisk (NYSE: NVO) has reported that a 2.4 milligram dose of CagriSema was associated with an average weight loss of 25% after 68 weeks in 2,309 women enrolled in a late-stage study called REDEFINE 1.
Women on placebo in the same study averaged just 3% weight loss, underlining the considerable gap in efficacy between the drug and doing nothing.
In a separate analysis conducted over the same 68-week period, 1,902 women with overweight or obesity due to menopause experienced mean weight loss of between 23% and nearly 27%.
The range in that analysis depended on whether patients were premenopausal, perimenopausal, or postmenopausal, with placebo patients in that group averaging just 2% weight loss.
CagriSema combines the company’s semaglutide molecule with another active compound, positioning it as a next-generation option within Novo Nordisk’s expanding weight loss portfolio.
However, in the head-to-head REDEFINE 4 trial pitting CagriSema against Zepbound’s molecule tirzepatide, the latter demonstrated either similar or slightly higher efficacy, hitting nearly 26% at maximum dose.
Investors were cautiously optimistic about the data, though that caution is seen as warranted given the competitive pressures Novo Nordisk continues to face in the obesity treatment market.
Novo Nordisk executives have had significant concerns about Eli Lilly, which became a formidable competitor after the FDA approved Zepbound toward the end of 2023.
Beyond obesity, Novo Nordisk is pursuing investigational programs targeting cardiovascular disease, blood and endocrine disorders, liver disease, and numerous other conditions that could diversify its long-term revenue base.
For investors considering a position in the stock, those developmental programs are worth watching closely, as a breakthrough in any one of them could materially improve the company’s fortunes.
CagriSema’s strong weight loss data alone is not widely seen as compelling enough to shift the trajectory of the beaten-down stock without broader pipeline progress to support it.
The results nonetheless offer a meaningful data point for a company that needs positive momentum after facing sustained pressure from a rival that has rapidly captured market share in the fast-growing obesity drug sector.
