Mamdani, who was elected New York City’s mayor as a self-described socialist, is under fire after a 2023 social media post about the September 11 attacks drew renewed attention.

The post, written on X in 2023, read: “Nearly 3,000 New Yorkers died on 9/11; 22 years later, the death hasn’t stopped. We mourn our neighbors who died that day. The hundreds of thousands who died in the wars that followed. The unknown millions injured & displaced. In their memory, we work toward a better world.”

Critics accused Mamdani of framing the anniversary around the wars that followed the attacks without naming who carried them out, describing the deaths in notably passive terms.

The resurfaced post compounds earlier controversy stemming from Mamdani’s interview with streamer Hasan Piker, who said in 2019 that “America deserved 9/11.”

Mamdani initially declined to condemn Piker’s remarks before eventually calling them “objectionable and reprehensible,” a reversal that did little to quiet his critics.

A Change.org petition organized by several victims’ families has called on ceremony organizers to reconsider Mamdani’s participation in the upcoming 25th anniversary commemoration at Ground Zero.

“We respectfully ask that the organizers carefully consider whether Mr. Mamdani’s participation would align with the intention of the ceremony and the expectations of the families most directly affected by the tragedy,” the petition states.

Giovanni Galante, who lost his wife Grace on September 11, organized the petition, citing Mamdani’s public record and what he characterized as the mayor’s minimization of the attacks.

Marc Thiessen, writing on social media, stated: “As someone who was in the Pentagon when the planes hit, this is absolutely disgraceful. You have no business ever setting foot at Ground Zero, much less on 9/11.”

New York City Councilwoman Inna Vernikov wrote: “I guess they all just ‘died’ in an accident? And then you wonder why the families of 9/11 victims don’t want you at the ceremony. Stay home, Mamdani.”

Florida Rep. Randy Fine wrote: “Nearly 25 years later, NYC’s Mayor is in bed with Muslim terrorists and refuses to call out evil for what it is.”

Fox News contributor and former NYPD officer Paul Mauro said: “You’ve made this easy. Don’t show up on 9/11 this year — or any year. We’re not interested in your moral equivalency, nepo baby.”

Rep. Nancy Mace wrote: “Americans were MURDERED by TERRORISTS in the most horrific way,” while former First Lady Jill Biden’s spokesperson Michael La Rosa responded simply: “Is this real?”

“Big Weekend Show” co-host Joey Jones added: “What a coward. They were murdered and sleep well at night knowing I and thousands of my brothers did our part to even the f—–g score.”

Despite the mounting pressure, Mamdani has said he plans to attend the commemoration alongside Vice President JD Vance and former presidents including Biden and Bush.

Fox News Digital reached out to Mamdani’s office for comment, and retired Port Authority officers have separately called on both Mamdani and Governor Hochul to stay away from Ground Zero on September 11.
