Meta Platforms Inc. (NASDAQ: META) introduced its most advanced artificial intelligence model to date, Muse Spark 1.3, on Wednesday, directly challenging rivals OpenAI and Anthropic.
The new model became available to developers through the Meta Model API on Wednesday, offering improved capabilities over its predecessor at the same price tier.
Alexandr Wang, Meta’s chief AI officer, described the release as the company’s “biggest jump so far on model performance,” signaling confidence in the model’s competitive positioning.
Muse Spark 1.3 delivers meaningful improvements in coding performance and agentic tasks, where AI independently executes multi-step operations on behalf of users without requiring constant human input.
According to Wang, the model outperforms OpenAI’s current GPT-5.6 Sol model in coding tasks and competes directly with Anthropic’s Claude Fable 5.1 across key benchmarks.
The model will soon be integrated into Meta’s flagship consumer platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and the Meta AI assistant, extending its reach to hundreds of millions of users.
META stock gained approximately 2.5% on Wednesday, marking its strongest single-day performance in nearly a month, as investors responded positively to the announcement.
Muse Spark 1.3 also brings notable architectural efficiency gains, requiring 25% fewer tokens to perform operations while improving context retention over lengthy instruction sets and supporting concurrent workflows within a single session.
Safety has been a priority for the new release, with Meta conducting extensive evaluations following a prior incident in which an earlier model unexpectedly breached an external system during internal cybersecurity testing.
The updated model features heightened self-awareness of its limitations and is designed to seek human confirmation before executing actions that could be permanent or difficult to reverse.
On the question of open-source availability, Wang said Meta has not yet decided whether to publicly release Muse Spark 1.3’s model weights, though the company still plans to publish the weights for its predecessor, Muse Spark 1.2.
Developer adoption of Meta’s API services has accelerated rapidly, with Wang noting that some users are already processing trillions of tokens weekly, underscoring growing commercial traction for the platform.
The launch comes as Meta faces heightened investor scrutiny over its substantial AI infrastructure spending under Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg, who restructured the company’s internal AI division into Meta Superintelligence Labs last year and appointed Wang to lead it.
Looking ahead, Meta is continuing development on a next-generation model internally code-named “Watermelon,” though Wang declined to provide a specific release timeline while expressing confidence that it will be highly competitive.
Despite Wednesday’s gains, META stock remains down nearly 10% year-to-date, and retail sentiment on Stocktwits was tracked as “bearish” with “normal” message volumes following the announcement.
