D-Wave Quantum (NASDAQ: QBTS) occupies a rare position in the technology sector as a pure-play quantum computing company with real, paying commercial customers.

Unlike its competitors, D-Wave’s annealing systems are already running production workloads at major corporations, a commercial milestone no other quantum computing firm has achieved.

AT&T is among the companies currently deploying D-Wave’s systems for live production use, a deal that management highlighted during the company’s Q2 2026 earnings call.

Remaining performance obligations hit $40.7 million at the end of June, representing a staggering 668% increase year over year, signaling strong and accelerating demand for the company’s technology.

More than half of that backlog is expected to convert into recognized revenue over the next twelve months, providing a degree of near-term financial visibility that is uncommon in the quantum computing space.

D-Wave is also broadening its technological platform beyond its core annealing business, having completed the acquisition of Quantum Circuits in January to add a gate-model program to its existing capabilities.

A peer-reviewed paper published in Nature this summer validated key architectural claims about the dual-rail approach that emerged from the Quantum Circuits acquisition, lending independent scientific credibility to the combined platform.

Management has set an ambitious target of 100 logical qubits and over one million reliable gate operations by 2032, thresholds widely regarded as the minimum bar for meaningful large-scale commercial quantum operations.

The company’s progress has not come without financial strain, as free cash flow stood at negative $119 million over the last four quarters, with the share count having doubled in two years through ongoing shareholder dilution.

Leadership continuity is also a near-term concern, with CFO John Markovich having announced his retirement, adding an element of executive uncertainty at a pivotal moment in the company’s growth trajectory.

Despite the commercial momentum, D-Wave’s valuation remains elevated, leaving investors with little margin for error should execution stumble or the broader quantum computing timeline shift.
