Rocket Lab Corp. (NASDAQ: RKLB) confirmed on August 16, 2026, that eight satellites it built for MDA Space have reached orbit and begun operating successfully.
The spacecraft launched on August 15 at 9:12 p.m. Eastern time from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida, marking a significant milestone for the company.
The eight satellites represent the first delivery under a $143 million contract that Rocket Lab signed with MDA Space back in 2022.
Rocket Lab said it has made contact with all eight spacecraft, confirming they are generating power and operating normally, with commissioning now underway.
The satellites join a network that enables hikers and other users outside cellular range to send emergency text messages, a service most consumers take for granted without knowing the infrastructure behind it.
The successful deployment arrives at a moment when Rocket Lab’s business identity is shifting meaningfully away from its founding focus on launch services.
In the second quarter of 2026, the company’s Space Systems division, which designs and builds satellites and components, generated $189.5 million in revenue, a jump of 38.6% from the prior quarter.
Launch Services, the division that originally defined Rocket Lab’s market position, brought in just $44.6 million during the same period, down 30% quarter over quarter.
The contrast between those two figures underscores how dramatically the company’s revenue mix has shifted toward satellite manufacturing and systems integration.
The $143 million MDA Space contract, while significant on its own terms, appears modest when measured against Rocket Lab’s total backlog, which reached $2.36 billion by the end of the second quarter.
Space Systems now accounts for 60% of that total backlog, cementing its role as the dominant engine of the company’s long-term revenue pipeline.
The scale of the backlog suggests that investor and customer confidence in Rocket Lab’s satellite capabilities has grown well beyond what its original launch business could have supported alone.
With the first eight MDA satellites now in orbit and operating, Rocket Lab moves closer to fulfilling the broader terms of the 2022 contract and demonstrating its ability to deliver complex satellite programs at scale.
