Erika Kirk has moved to publicly deny claims that she is stepping down permanently as chief executive of Turning Point USA, dismissing viral speculation about her resignation as false and insisting she is only taking a short break following the traumatic events of the White House Correspondents’ Dinner shooting in Washington DC last month.
The rumour was sparked on May 5th when YouTuber Chase Geiser posted a message on X asserting that Kirk would step down from her leadership role at the conservative youth organisation, a claim that spread rapidly through right-leaning social media circles before many users had checked its accuracy.
Kirk’s response was swift and dismissive, replying directly to the post with just four words — “First I’m hearing of it” — while Andrew Kolvet, a spokesman for Turning Point USA, reinforced the denial with an equally blunt two-word post of his own: “Fake news.”
The confusion was rooted in a genuine, if temporary, withdrawal from public duties that Kirk had announced in the aftermath of the April 25th shooting at the Washington Hilton, where gun violence erupted during the annual Correspondents’ Dinner attended by journalists, political figures, and invited guests.
In a video statement addressing the incident, Kirk described the psychological toll the evening had taken on her, saying it represented “yet another traumatic example of the evil in our country and the continued rise in political violence,” and confirmed she would be spending time with her family to recover before returning to her duties.
A separate clip filmed during her evacuation from the hotel showed her visibly distressed and sobbing, footage that circulated widely and prompted both sympathy and, in some quarters, scepticism about whether the reaction was genuine, adding another layer of controversy to an already fraught public profile.
Kirk became CEO of TPUSA in the aftermath of her husband Charlie Kirk’s assassination on September 10th, 2025, when the organisation’s 31-year-old founder was shot in broad daylight, a killing that left the conservative movement shaken and transformed his widow into one of the most scrutinised figures in American political culture almost overnight.
The episode has done nothing to dampen the ongoing tension between Kirk and conservative pundit Candace Owens, who has used various public platforms to challenge Kirk’s conduct, share what she presents as leaked internal recordings, and raise broader questions about the organisation’s direction under its new leadership.
A former employee, Aubrey Laitsch, who worked at TPUSA for four and a half years most recently as a public relations manager, added to the noise by posting a video claiming she was dismissed after an Uber driver allegedly reported her criticising the company, though she disputed that account and suggested her termination was connected to her questions about the circumstances of Charlie Kirk’s death.
None of the allegations made against Turning Point USA or Erika Kirk in recent weeks have been tested in legal proceedings, and the organisation has not publicly addressed the specific claims made by former staff.
For now, the position is clear: Erika Kirk remains TPUSA’s CEO, on a self-described temporary break rather than a permanent exit, with the organisation showing no signs of making any formal leadership change.
