Palantir Technologies (NASDAQ: PLTR) is trading around $146 after a sharp and turbulent month that saw the stock drop from $150 to below $128 in early April before recovering, a whipsaw that captured the two forces now permanently in conflict around one of the most debated names in the AI investment landscape.
The selloff was triggered in part by bearish commentary from investor Michael Burry suggesting that Anthropic was competing directly with Palantir in enterprise AI adoption, a claim that analyst Daniel Ives of Wedbush described as a “fictional narrative.” The stock fell 7 percent over two consecutive sessions before buyers stepped back in on the combination of a Trump endorsement and renewed focus on the depth of Palantir’s government contract portfolio.
The Iran war has put Palantir’s defense capabilities under an unusually bright spotlight. The company’s Maven AI platform, a command-and-control system that ingests data from more than 150 sensor and intelligence sources and generates battlefield targeting recommendations, was reported to have processed 1,000 targets in the first 24 hours of Operation Epic Fury. Trump subsequently praised the company publicly on Truth Social, a signal the market interpreted as meaningful given its implications for the continuation of existing contracts and the likelihood of further awards.
The $10 billion Army enterprise agreement signed in July 2025 consolidated 75 separate active Palantir contracts under a single framework, and Palantir was recently identified as one of the companies competing alongside Thales and Air Space Intelligence for a new FAA artificial intelligence tool for air traffic management as part of a broader $32 billion effort to modernise the national air traffic control system.
The Q4 2025 results that underpin the current bull case were genuinely impressive. Revenue grew 70 percent year on year to $1.407 billion, beating the $1.32 billion estimate, with US commercial revenue growing 137 percent year on year in a result that has fundamentally shifted the argument about the company’s long-term dependency on government work. The 2026 guidance projects full-year revenue of $7.18 to $7.20 billion, representing 61 percent growth, with US commercial revenue alone expected to exceed $3.1 billion.
The next earnings report is due May 4, and it will be the first opportunity for management to address directly the Anthropic narrative, provide an update on commercial pipeline momentum and offer early signals on how defense revenues are tracking against the growth implied by an expanding contract base during an active conflict.
The valuation remains the central reason analyst consensus is so fractured. At approximately 231 times trailing earnings and trading at 60 to 80 times forward revenue depending on the day, Jefferies has a price target of $70 implying 51 percent downside, while the analyst consensus average sits at $186.22, implying 27 percent upside from current levels. The 52-week range of $89.31 to $207.52 illustrates how wide the conviction gap between bulls and bears has been in practice, and how much of the story ultimately comes down to whether the AIP commercial growth trajectory holds through the end of the year.
