On Thursday, the United National Security Council adopted a Resolution proposed by the United Kingdom, France and Lebanon and supported by the United States, confirming that member states can “take all necessary measures … to protect civilians and civilian populated areas under threat of attack”. Susan Rice, the United States’ Permanent Representative added that “The United States stands with the Libyan people in support of their universal rights”. I am wondering if we can expect this same level of support for the civilian Palestinian population and populated areas of Palestine, which regularly find themselves under military assault from the armed forces of Israel, which open fire on Palestinian civilians at will, bomb their school, hospitals and residential areas, and have a de facto blockade of Gaza in place. Ambassador Rice: Does the United States also stand with the Palestinian people in support of their universal rights? It would represent a welcome change in U.S. policy at the Security Council.
