The American experiment, which Franklin predicted could not be kept, was hijacked by the very forces against which the founders (most) struggled. The Civil War was the death blow, or those forces behind it, and the Federal Reserve was the first nail in the coffin. The 20th century was the story of America's destruction from within. At this point, it's over. We only have the remaining conditions with which to deal. This is, now, a post-America era. Done deal.

Courageous article, Dr. Roberts. However, if unrestricted global free trade prevails, by the time that China and other Asian nations lose their wage advantage over the US, America's workforce will have lost most of its industrial skills, including high level skills in software, design and engineering, thereby losing industrial competitiveness despite an equality or advantage in labor cost.According to the great French historian Fernand Braudel, the transformation in the economic status of European nations that occurred during the industrial revolution depended on initial differences in wages. Low-wage countries in Northern Europe, particularly Britain, developed export industries producing cheap, poor-quality textiles and other manufactured goods. Growth of exports promoted investment and innovation, which improved product quality and competitiveness. As a result, by the time those formerly poor Northern nations became rich they were able to compete successfully against nations with lower wages. So what defensive measures can the United States and other developed nations take to prevent being buried industrially by low-wage Asian countries? A tariff seems the obvious solution. Is there any reason for not invoking it? If so, what alternative, if any, is there?

Global free trade will tend to even out wage disparities among nations, thereby creating a level playing field for all participants.
