Your characterizations here and in earlier articles at this site of Harry Truman as a “Christian Zionist”, implying that he was in some way cut from the same cloth theologically as are John Hagee or Pat Robertson, is just simply nonsence. Truman, a Southern Baptist, was a religious person certainly, but at the time of his presidency, his denomination was fully 30 years away from the capture of it’s seminaries it experienced by the cadres of the dispensational theology that today hold sway in the demomination. Truman’s beliefs almost certainly would have conformed to the rather more conventional, covenantal Calvinism dominant in his denomination at the time. There would have been none of the dubious speculation about prophesy that one sees as important to most of today’s Baptists. In Truman’s time, Premillenial Dispensationalism was dominant only among groups considered tangential to the Baptist mainstrean, groups such as the very small General Association Of Regular Baptists, or Independent Baptists of the Frank Norris variety. It is the measure of Dispensationalism’s success, however, that covenantal Calvinism is all but dead today in these very same precincts. But you very badly need to reconsider to what extent this misunderstanding of yours impacts your take on the relevant history, as impact it, it does.
