I’ve had the same common belief for the past few years now. I studied Korean to an advanced level (not fluent, but as good as most Westerners could learn in a few years) and I am content with what I’ve learned. I am often met with awe and shock about how well I speak the language, although I rarely agree with this assessment. Korean’s are exposed to English absolutely *EVERYWHERE*, even in their own language. ‘Annoyed’ might be too strong of a word, but it’s the only word I can think of at 5am. Yeah, I was annoyed at how accessible English was to Koreans. What an odd thing to get annoyed about. But I guess it’s merely because Korean is so ‘inaccessible’ outside of Korea. Yet I still managed to learn it simply because I had the will to.
I recently considered learning Mongolian for personal reasons, but then I looked at the material available for it: 0. None. Not even a decent phrase book. So, I guess I won’t be learning that anytime soon.
